Our Process

How a job runs in Petersburg, step by step: free quote, written scope, written quote, sign-off - and the cheaper option named when there is one.

Sequence

Four steps, start to finish

A free quote by phone, and a written quote before any visit.

  1. Call and describe what you see

Where the water shows, when it started, and what the meter does with every fixture off. That usually rules out a source or two before anyone drives over.

  2. Get the figure in writing

The estimated range becomes a written quote for the visit, with any after-hours charge said up front. Nothing starts until you agree to it.

  3. We isolate, then listen

Hot side against cold, house against buried line, one section of plumbing against the next. Then the equipment that isolation points to: pressure, acoustic, thermal, moisture or tracer gas.

  4. You keep the finding

The spot marked, how it was found, what the pipe is made of and what the repair is likely to involve, in writing, for any licensed plumber you like.

What it costs

The prices, in one place

Before anyone is booked

Four checks that cost nothing

The first tells you whether water is moving at all, and the last tells you whose line it may be.

  1. Read the meter with everything off

Every faucet and appliance off, then watch the low-flow indicator, the small dial or triangle. Still turning means water is going somewhere. Dead still across two readings an hour apart means you very probably have nothing to find.

  2. Compare the bill with the dials

A bill is arithmetic on a reading, and readings can be wrong. If the number on the bill does not match the register on the meter, call Utility Billing at (804) 733-2349 before anyone else. The City repairs City water meters, meter leaks included.

  3. Close the main valve at the house

With the meter still on, a dial that stops puts the loss past that valve, inside the house. One that keeps turning puts it between the meter and the valve. Which stretch that covers depends on where your meter sits.

  4. Ask who owns the line

We do not state that rule for you. Utility Billing can confirm the owner of your line, and knowing it before a repair is quoted means the question of who pays has already been settled.

The local catch

Old pipe, old walls, and why the order of the visit matters

What is cheap in a newer house gets expensive in an old one, unless the order is right.

Petersburg's waterworks date to 1856, public pipes of 70 to 100 years and more are reported, and the median home is about 1970 with roughly one in six built before 1940 by census-derived estimates. That is a lot of old plumbing and a lot of plaster and brick worth keeping, and the difference between a small opening and a large one is made before anyone picks up a tool.

So the visit runs in a set order: the meter, the bill, the isolation of one system from the next, and only then the equipment, so that a thermal camera or a ground microphone is pointed at one section and not at the whole house. The opening for the repair, when there is one, goes where the fitting is.
